The American Veterinary Medical Association has mobilized resources to help veterinarians confront a new World screwworm outbreak detected in Texas.
Veterinarians on the Front Line
Practitioners across the United States are already monitoring, diagnosing and treating animals that could be affected. They are also reporting suspected cases to state and federal authorities, a step that the AVMA says is vital for containment.
“Veterinarians are the trusted experts on the ground who possess the medical expertise required to limit animal suffering and prevent further spread of this parasite,” said Dr. Michael Q. Bailey, the AVMA president. “The AVMA is committed to equipping our members with up‑to‑date resources and guidance they need to remain proactively vigilant, protect their clients’ animals, and effectively combat NWS.”
Why Early Detection Matters
New World screwworm larvae feed on living tissue of warm‑blooded animals, causing rapid tissue loss and infection that can be fatal. Early recognition and swift veterinary intervention are therefore essential to prevent severe outcomes.
Their job is to spot signs like draining lesions, foul odors or visible larvae, especially in animals that have been in or near affected areas.

Standardized Reporting and Sample Collection
When a case is suspected, vets report to state and federal authorities.
Guidelines also dictate how treatment should proceed. Veterinarians must choose appropriate products, respect withdrawal times for food‑producing animals, and ensure that a proper veterinarian‑client‑patient relationship is in place before any medication is administered.
Beyond Clinical Care
Not all participants are in the clinic. State and federal animal health officers are shaping policy, while extension veterinarians provide outreach and education. Laboratory diagnosticians confirm the presence of screwworm larvae, and epidemiologists track the spread.
Researchers are studying the parasite’s biology, and professional service representatives are helping vets access prevention and treatment products.

Its mission extends to improving the health of animals, humans and the environment. In this outbreak, the organization is acting as a hub for clinical resources, offering up‑to‑date guidance, educational materials and a platform for veterinarians to share observations.

“We’re building on a centralized hub of clinical resources,” the AVMA statement reads, noting that the hub will continue to evolve as new information emerges. The association says the hub will include diagnostic tools, treatment protocols and contact lists for rapid communication.
Coordination with Partners
Federal, state and industry partners are working together to create a coordinated response. The collaborative effort includes the USDA, state animal health departments and private companies that produce veterinary pharmaceuticals.
